I never thought that making a research paper would be such a hard thing for me to do. It’s not that the professor is asking us to do a big work, but I don’t even have a good topic. I’ve been thinking a lot , but I don’t find any interesting topic. The first topic I tought about was leuquemia and how this disease affects the person who have it and he/she family. I thought in this topic because one of my best friends was found with that disease, but then I realized that it was not what the professor want because it is a typical topic and has a lot of information. I’ve been always been interested in aliens(ufo’s) and I’m thinking in doing my research paper about it. I made the 10 questions the professor asked us to do. These questions included: Does aliens really exist?, Who was the first person who talked about them?. where do they live?,do they really visit the Earth?, etc. It is a very interesting topic for me, but I don’t think I could do a well developed research paper with this topic. Honestly, I’m not searching information about it yet, not even the annotated bibliography. I hope when I start to search information, it would be easier for me to develop my paper.

How we all know, the youth is a hard period not only for us, the young people, if not for our parents too. Sometimes our parents are not enough ready to face the changes we have in our youth. When we are growing, we think that we deserve everything, that everything is good, that bad things wont happen to us, etc., but something that we usually forget is that our parents know a lot of things even when they are not every second beside us. They use to talk and give advices to us for a reason. Even when they don’t understand a lot things of our times, they know that we need some advices that help us. How they usually say, they were young some time ago and know a lot of things that we do because they did the same when they were young. Sometimes or almost everytime they are trying to avoid that we pass through the same things they passed, but in my opinion, that is not always good. I think that we have to have some experiences in our life to do with our children the same things that our parents do with us, give them advices based on our own experiences. It’s been a long time to me to understand my parents and they to understand me, but one thing that I’m really sure is that all the things they do are to help me to be fine.

I remember I had my best vacations ever when I was 16 years old. That summer 2005, my cousin Eilleen, that lives in Orlando,Florida, was here in Puerto Rico with me during one month and half. We went together everywhere, beach, shopping, movies, we also went to night clubs even when we had not the appropiate age to get in. We had fun a lot. We also met a lot of new people in the places we were because my cousin is very outgoing and talks with everybody. I remember one night that we went to a club and met three guys. They bought some drinks to us and we spend all the night talking and dancing, and now, we still been good friends. The day she would leave we were so sad because we spend one month and a half together. We cried a lot, so my mom decided to send me to Florida with my cousin. I arrived there and the summer continued been fun. There we did the same thing we did here, but going to night clubs because there is more difficult to get in the clubs if you don’t have 18 years old or more. At night, we sneaked out from her house and went to her boyfriend’s house to swim in his pool. I’m not saying that sneak out is a good thing to do, but it was fun for us. Thank God her parents never knew that we did such thing. Finally, the summer got over and I got back to Puerto Rico, but I will never forget those vacations.

If I have a million dollar, first of all, I would buy a big house for me and my family. At this moment, one of the principal things that I would do with that money is to pay the hard and expensive treatment for leuquemia for one of my best friends. I’d also buy a brand new car(who doesn’t want a Ferrari?). I’d it help my parents to pay their debts. I will also go shopping spread, and finally make my dream come true, go on trip to Egypt. This will be the last thing that I would do with that money. Definitly, I will only be happy with a million dollar, it’s just what I need, but if I have much more, like Donald Trump, I would help a lot of poor people, not only around the world, if not here in my country Puerto Rico. I think that if in P.R. would be a smart and humble person with all the money that have Donald Trump or Bill Gates, that person could do a lot of wonder things for our people, definitly could do a big difference in our country. I hope that person would be me 🙂

Yesterday, while I was driving my car, a van passed beside my car and when I looked at it, it was an official car of the Department of Family. It passed very fast beside me, but i could notice a little boy in the back seat. I looked at him and he looked at me;it lasted seconds; it lasted a seconds, but I ould see sadness in his eyes. I had never seen something like thid. I heard sometimes about those children that are removed from their houses for different reasons, but I’ve never tought about how these children felt until yesterday. When I saw the sadness of that boy, I felt angry, sad, in someway, fortunate. I started to think on what he was probably thinking in that moment. Maybe he was asking himself where those people were going to take him, who are going to be his foster parents or, maybe, he was just thinking or remembering his siblings that, probably, will never see again. Certainly, these children suffer a lot this unexpected changes in their life. Although they are just children, they see and understand everything around them. I saw this bou that probably was near of his new family and I hope that this family will be a good one for him.

When we were doing a peer review of our position paper in class, honestly, I had nothing done. I thougth in some topics to do my position paper, but i had nothing written yet. I had two possibles topics in mind. One of them was domestic violence in P.R. and the other one was if we should vote or not in the next elections in P.R. Well, the first one is a real problem that affects our country, but I didn’t find opposite perpesctives in it. I don’t think there are people who openly agree with domestic violence, just the “machistas”, but I couldn’t develop a position paper with it, so I decided to do it of the vote or not vote topic. I started my draft in the classroom. The most difficult part of writting is to start, but then you can develop your ideas better. That’s the way I started it. I had some of my ideas written, but not organized. I tried to focus it in why young people should not vote in the next elections in P.R.

Sometimes, life give us hard moments that touch us deep in the heart. A lot of times we have to learn from those moments, so that we never pass through this experiences again. Those bad experiences that we have in life make us feel sad, angry, depressed, etc, but if we learn from them, they should give us strength to continue our life in a better way. You must ask yourself why am I telling you all this?, well, I’ll tell you why. I should say that these experiences that I will telll you are private moments in my life that are more difficult than they appear to be. First, I have to see my mom in a deep depression because of a separation with my father. I was tha only one beside her because my brother didn’t care at all, or at least, he didn’t showed it. I was not able to understand her sadness because I was young and I have never been in that situation before, but thank God, they are happy now. Then came the most difficult moment in my life, the death of my best friend William. I said it was the most difficult because it is the only one that is irremediable. And now, the last one, but not least, actually it is very hard for me, but at least this one have an amendment… my divorce! I know it sounds weird because I’m just 20 years old, but sadly I got marry with the wrong person and five months later he decided that I was not the woman he wanted. That’s part of my short life!

We can see and hear almost everyday, about a woman killen by her partner. We started this year with, at least, three or four domestic violence crimes. Since the beginning of time, women have been under men’s orders, especially in latin america countries like Puerto Rico, and this situation have iniciated many domestic violence crimes. It’s incredible that men in P.R. still have this kind of behavior. How it is possible that they think that women are things they can hit, throw away and even destroy at any moment? This is unnaceptable. We can’t tolerate this anymore. We should do more to let women know that violent attitudes of a men could be dangerous. A lot of women fear of their partners and sometimes, they call it “respect”,but they can respect and be afraid of somebody that could end their life at any moment. An abused woman should look inmediatly for help and be apart as much as possible from that man that is threatening her life.

My feelings over the content of my work is satisfactory. I feel that my work is well orginized. I began writing about the opposing view and not by my point of view. I think that i have well described the opposing view. This work is sicnificance because is not only about people feel of the the politicians, if not how I feel about it. What i like the best is that I explained very well my point of view over politics knowing that a lot of people think different from me. I think that I had express everything that I had to say. I don’t think my work needs more work. I put a lot of effort because I had to write it in a convincing way to let people know that voting is not the only way to make a change in our country.

Some months ago began in Puerto Rico a campaign named “Vota o quedate calla’o”. This campaign is directed, primarily, by young actors, players and singers, like Daddy Yankee, that want to motivate young people to vote in the next elections of Puerto Rico. The principal message of this campaign is that if you don’t vote, then you don’t have the right to talk about the election’s results. Daddy Yankee said: “We have the power of changing the whole situation of the country. We are going to make a movement in which we, the young people let ourselves be heard, and then we will select our next leader. It’s our responsibility as puertorricans to pursue our rights”. This message sounds very convincing, but for me these words mean that is our responsibility to select a person who won’t do any difference or good things for P.R. Not in a negative way, but I don’t think this campaign is going to be successful in P.R.

“Vota o quedate calla’o” sounds like a dictatorial phrase. We are in a democratic country and nobody has the right to tell us when we should talk or when we shouldn’t. They say that our vote is worth a lot, actually, that’s why I am not going to vote. I’m not going to misspend my vote knowing that all the politicians are the same, and they are going to do the same mistakes every single year. Around 700,000 young people in Puerto Rico can vote in these elections, but this campaign has convinced just 100,000 of them. Obviously, they have achieved part of their goal, but not enough to say that young people in P.R. are convinced and motivated to select their next leaders.

We all know that the principal theme these days in our country has been politics. We see and hear daily news related with the principal politicians of Puerto Rico. They are making a huge effort, by their politic strategies to get sympathy, respect and trust of the Puertorricans. These politicians often appear in T.V. and radio to present their respective ideas. They try to persuade and convince people that they are the best alternative. They also comment about the ideas and private life of their opponents to make them look less capable of leading the country. Walking on the streets, especially by poor sectors, is one of their favorite strategies trying to take a “solidarity” message, but what happen after they get the power?

Every four years, we see this kind of strategies that politicians use to achieve their unique goal: rule the country. Everything is good at the beginning. They promise to make better the economic and social situations that affect our country, but then everything gets worst. Then the controversies, scandals, fights, corruption, and finally the chaos begins. For this reason, we, the young people, are getting disappointed of these leaders of our country. We often see how these people are accused of corruption, conspiration, violence, unfaithfulness, etc. This kind of situations makes us think how are we going to let these people lead us when they don’t even know how to lead themselves? These politicians are criminals, like the one that steal or kill, the only difference is that they have money to cover and manage their crimes. How about the popular case of the ex-governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Roselló? Almost every member of his cabinet was accused and guilty of corruption, but their leader, Pedro Roselló, “didn’t know anything of what was happening”. The “blues” are not the only ones, what about the judgment against the current governor of P.R., Ánibal Acevedo Vilá? He has 24 federal criminal charges against him and he still governing the country, even worst, he will run on the elections of November 4th 2008. I can’t talk about the PIP party because, honestly, I haven’t heard much of them because they are not been on the power, but I’m sure that if they were it will be the same story. All this is like a joke, they make fun of us, but they know that with only few campaigns, a lot of Puertorricans forget what they have done and vote for them again.

Each person has the right to decide if they’ll vote or not. Definitely, the young people have the power to decide the future of our country, but the majority of us are sending a clear message of disappoint choosing not to vote for the same people that year after year betray our trust. This message is making a difference. It is forcing people to make different things to persuade us to vote, but we don’t need just some campaigns, we need a real change for Puerto Rico.
